Story Collection

The Story Collection is now in its 4th year. Home and class learners are encouraged to write short stories on imagined or real subjects. Topics have ranged from “My first solo trip on the Thames, “A hang-gliding Challenge”, “The Donkey and the Haunted House”, to “Frustrated Dreams”, “Grandfather and his funny watermelon story”, “My Plans and Dreams”, “Life in the UK”.

We produce an illustrated booklet of the stories and prizes for stories will be presented by the Mayor of Merton.

In April, 2018, our conversation group, Time to Talk, ran a community fund-raising event at St. Mark’s Family Centre. Everyone made a sweet or savoury dish, one of the group played the flute, there was paper flower making and henna painting. Lots of friends and family came to enjoy the afternoon, including Wimbledon MP, Stephen Hammond and his wife, Sally. We raised just over £200. Everyone was keen to repeat the event, which we did in June 2019. We plan to hold a similar event each year.

Encouraged by the success of our tea events, we organized our first Curry Lunch in November 2019, which raised just over £400. A team of ‘masterchefs’ from the group provided delicious home-made curries and traditional English puddings were made by our volunteers.

We hope both will become regular fixtures in our Events calendar.
